A mum has been left heartbroken after only five children showed up to her birthday party after inviting the entire class. She explained how she invited 30 children to celebrate her three-year-old's birthday with her, alongside her family, but only a handful 'bothered to turn up'.

Taking to Reddit, she said: "I’m heartbroken. My daughter turned three and we had her birthday party yesterday. I had over 30 kids invited and only five showed up. 2pm rolled around and there was only one kid there. The rest started showing up around 2:45pm"

But while the youngster "didn't care" about only having five friends at her party, her mum spent the entire afternoon trying to hold back tears. "As a mum it broke my heart," she added. "We make a point to go to all parties whenever possible and this was her first party we threw.

"I put so much money and effort into it, we rented a hall, spent over $150 (£123) in decorations. She had four presents to open and I feel like every other kid has 20 plus. I love her because she was so grateful but I can’t stop crying today - she’s the sweetest child and nobody came for her.

"It’s not about the gifts, I know, but it’s hard not to compare to what other kids get. I really tried to give her the best birthday." While most users tried to reassure the mum, others say getting five children to attend a three-year-old's party is a success.

One user said: "At this age, their social circle is your own. If you want her to have friends then you have to be friends with the kid’s parents." Another user added: "She's three. It doesn't matter. I remember a suggestion that the number of kids at a birthday party should equal the age of the child plus one.

"Thirty - three-year-olds or 30 anything would be a zoo, she would not enjoy herself in all the chaos. Three-year-olds are like cats, give her a box to play in, tell her it's a moon rocket, and she'll be happy. She doesn't need 30 presents to keep up with the Jones."

A third user said: "Five people at a party for a three-year-old is a decent bit. I think the first birthday party I actually remember was like my 7th or 8th. Don’t beat yourself up over anything. It sounds like you were trying really hard to throw a nice party and it didn’t go the way you wanted. But it sounds like your kid had a good time! Don’t put too much weight on these parties."
