True crime fanatic arrested for murdering woman 'out of morbid curiosity'
Stories of true crime have always piqued a morbid curiosity in people, and in the last decade, popularity in podcasts, books, documentaries, and TV shows on the subject have reached an all-time high. But Jung Yoo-jung's fascination took a deadly turn when she was accused of killing a stranger after developing an obsession with true crime.
The 23-year-old, from South Korea, allegedly confessed to the murder after police found inconsistencies in her story and her own family urged her to confess. According to The Chosun Ilbo, Jung had become obsessed with true crime and wanted to commit the ‘perfect murder’ herself. She allegedly began meticulously preparing for the killing by reading more and more books on the subject searching the internet, and watching TV shows on the matter.
After her arrest, police revealed that analysis of her mobile phone showed numerous searches for tips on how to conceal a body, and she had also borrowed crime books from a library. Jung allegedly found her victim by using an app that connects parents and tutors. Posing as a mum looking for someone to help her ninth-grade daughter with her English, she quickly matched with a woman and organised a meeting a few days later.

In order to gain access to the victim’s home, Jung dressed in a school uniform she’d found and bought online. A police spokesman said: “Jung is short and with the uniform on, the victim probably mistook her for a middle-school student.”

The victim, whose name has not been released, invited her into her home where Jung allegedly stabbed her to death with a knife. After the murder, she is said to have visited a nearby shop to buy bleach and bin bags. She then returned to the victim’s home where she allegedly dismembered her in order to dispose of the body more easily.
Jung planned on making it look as if the victim had gone away, so she made sure to gather up her mobile phone, ID card, and wallet. But despite the preparation that went into the murder, Jung made a crucial mistake when disposing of the body parts.
After filling a suitcase with the body, Jung hired a taxi to take her to a wooded area near the Nakdong River. Unsurprisingly, the driver of the cab found her behaviour extremely suspicious and he reported her to the police.

Instead of getting away with the perfect murder, the unemployed woman was arrested. After speaking to police, Jung allegedly tried to explain the murder by blaming it on an argument that got out of hand. However, she ended up confessing after detectives found holes in her story and her family urged her to do the right thing.
Discussing the shocking crime, a police spokesperson told reporters: “Jung also said she feels sorry for what she did,” adding that she was a “loner”. They went on: “We are conducting tests to see if she is a psychopath. “Jung was found to have premeditated the crime driven by a desire to kill someone after she became obsessed with murder from TV programs and books,” the police said. According to The Korean Times, Jung said of her heinous act: “I think I was out of my mind.” Jung has been indicted for murder.
