A video showed a bear confidently entering a home, opening a freezer and stealing a box of lasagna.

The huge animal broke into a residence in Barkhamsted, a town in Connecticut, and wandered around the rooms of the house before helping itself into the kitchen and to the residents' food. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but the amusing incident was captured on video by the property's Ring cameras.

The homeowner, Helena Richardson, then shared a sequence of Ring videos on social media revealing a rather unusual visitor. The footage depicted the bear strolling through the living room before sauntering into the kitchen, where it skilfully opened the bottom freezer of the refrigerator. Its prize? A hearty lasagna. Unperturbed, the bear then made a swift exit through a nearby window.

The homeowner, unaware of the culinary adventure until she reviewed her Ring footage, expressed shock at the bear's audacity. The bear, tagged by authorities, seemed undeterred by human presence, highlighting the concerning issue of habituated bears losing their natural fear of humans.

Helena Richardson captioned the videos, "So this happened" in her Facebook post, and attracted thousands of views and a lot of comments from amused social media users. Someone wrote, "Congrats on the new dog" to which Helena humorously replied, "I wish I could keep it."

Helena told Channel 3: "You can see it going from room to room, as comfortable as I am in my house. It was very hard to believe. My mom made me some lasagna, I left it in the freezer, and the bear just, you know, took it."

Helena explained that she was away from home when she got a Ring notification about something being inside her home. "I knew no one was supposed to be at home at that time so I checked and... indeed was a bear. It actually stayed in the house for about 35 minutes."

Authorities, including the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), have been warning residents about the risks associated with habituated bears. These animals, enticed by human-sourced foods such as trash, birdseed, or dog food, often resort to dangerous behaviour, including breaking into homes, putting public safety at risk. DEEP's statistics paint a worrisome picture, with bears breaking into homes nearly 70 times the previous year alone.
