Guimaraes' Newcastle clause has 'exception' to join 'dream' club for lower fee
Bruno Guimaraes' new contract at Newcastle contains a clause that would let him join Barcelona for a cut-price fee.
Guimaraes signed a new five-year deal to extend his stay at the Magpies, having arrived in January 2022. He has since gone on to become a key player for Eddie Howe 's side, as they surprisingly claimed qualification to the Champions League last season.
The Brazilian has been rewarded for his efforts with a bumper pay rise as Newcastle chiefs look to tie him down. But those hopes have been dealt a blow after it emerged that there is a clause that Barcelona alone can activate to buy the midfielder for a lower fee.
The revelation that such a clause exists was revealed by Spanish newspaper Sport. It is claimed that the 'secret clause' means that if Barca pursued a move for the midfielder, the price they would pay would be 'somewhat less' than if a different club tried to buy him.
Barca would only have to pay around £60million if they wanted to bring Guimaraes to the Nou Camp. Though at the present time that is a price the La Liga champions cannot afford, a future move has not been completely ruled out.

Potential sales next summer would improve Barca's financial standing, which could lead to a move for the Newcastle star. It is also claimed that Guimaraes has not lost hope of one day playing for Barca despite their current financial problems.

Publicly though, the Brazil international has insisted he is happy with life at St James' Park and is putting his full focus into Newcastle.
“I remember in my first interview, I said I wanted to play for this club in the Champions League and now it’s happening. We are doing so well and when I look around the pitch at my team-mates," he said after signing his new deal.
"I am so proud of them all. I’m proud of everyone; the team, the staff, the owners and the fans. The city believes again and it’s unbelievable what we have done for the team. I hope that this can continue. It’s amazing what has happened in my life in the last two years.
“The fans have made me feel at home since my first day here and I feel so loved in my life. I’m so happy here. It’s a place that is so comfortable to be and I hope to keep making the supporters happy and helping the team do well. That’s my goal, because there are no words to describe how happy I am to be here.”
Boss Howe has also insisted the midfielder is committed to the club. He said: “I think he epitomises the recent success we’ve had. He’s put in so many good displays, he’s very consistent and he’s got a great personality off the pitch as well.
“He cares very deeply about Newcastle United and the success of the club and he’s got a great relationship with our supporters. He’s been a key signing for us – definitely the type of signing that we want to make.”
