Rishi Sunak is sending British armed forces to the eastern Mediterranean.

The Prime Minister claims the military presence is there to support Israel and prevent a further escalation of the conflict. The operation must stick to these parameters or risk inflaming a febrile situation and dragging Britain into a wider regional conflict.

Our support for Israel should also be accompanied by a greater diplomatic effort to secure humanitarian aid to Gaza. Israel has vowed to hold Hamas responsible for the barbaric crimes it has committed.

It has cut power and water supplies to Gaza in a siege that will only be lifted if 150 hostages captured by Hamas are freed. Israel’s grief is raw but its response must be proportionate and show an understanding for innocent victims.

The majority of people in Gaza have suffered terribly under the corrupt regime of Hamas yet they are paying the price for its atrocities. The blockade and bombardment has already left hundreds of thousands of people homeless.

A humanitarian corridor must be established to bring aid to the Palestinians. A catastrophe looms unless humanity can prevail.

Safety first

Earlier this year, Rishi Sunak vowed to put more offenders behind bars. Now, the Government is urging judges to delay sentencing due to a shortage of prison places, raising the terrifying prospect that rapists and burglars could escape going to jail.

The PM has betrayed the victims of crime. Too few cases are investigated by police, prosecution rates have fallen and the courts backlog means victims wait longer for justice. The first priority of any government is to keep people safe, yet the Conservatives are failing in this most basic of duties.

Lucky 13

Houses numbered 13 are typically cheaper than neighbouring properties. Unless they are superstitious, bargain hunters could be in luck.
