Gun violence continues to be a source of division and controversy in the US. Advocates for stricter gun control are pushing the banning of assault weapons and stronger background checks for people hoping to purchase a gun, while opponents say this will restrict their Second Amendment rights.

Ingham County Prosecutor John Dewane said Theodore Lawson's slaying Sunday does not appear to be connected to his political activities or beliefs. Lawson, 63, was a member of Ingham County’s Board of Canvassers and served as secretary of the county’s Democratic Party.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, at least 33,655 deaths related to gun violence have been recorded in the US this year alone. The data says 14,848 of the total deaths were due to homicide, defensive gun use, murder or were unintentional.
