Madonna's been known to the people of the UK and the world as "Madge" but the world never really knew why, until now.

A new biography about the Queen of Pop has hit the shelves this week on Tuesday. Madonna: A Rebel Life by Mary Gabriel has been highly anticipated since it was announced.

Mary writes that Madonna started being called Madge at the turn of the century by the British public, the MailOnline reported. The name reportedly stuck because while she was in the country creating her 2000 album Music in Britain, the public saw her as a more "normal" pop star rather than a diva.

Guy Ritchie, Madge's second husband, tells a different story though. In an effort to boost her ego and make her feel extraordinary, Guy told Madonna that Madge was short for Her Majesty. "Her Maj" was already a nickname for the then Queen Elizabeth II.

The new biography comes as the Queen of Pop herself is rehearsing for her Celebration World Tour. The tour was supposed to start in July, but just a few weeks before her first tour date she ended up in the hospital.

Her manager, Guy Oseary, shared the news on Instagram that Madge was in a hospital in New York being treated for a severe bacterial infection. A few days after the announcement, she was released from the hospital and sent home to recover.

She later posted an update on her health on Instagram. "Thank you for your positive energy, prayers and words of healing and encouragement. I have felt your love. I’m on the road to recovery and incredibly grateful for all the blessings in my life,” she said.

“My first thought when I woke up in the hospital was my children. My second thought was that I did not want to disappoint anyone who bought tickets for my tour. I also didn’t want to let down the people who worked tirelessly with me over the last few months to create my show," she continued, "I hate to disappoint anyone. My focus is now my health and getting stronger and I can assure you, I’ll be back with you as soon as I can!”

Madonna's tour dates were rescheduled, and the Celebration Tour is set to kick off at the O2 Arena in London later this month. The tour comes 40 years after the release of her debut album of the same name.
