Energised Keir Starmer glittered on his big day, sprinkled with stardust as a protest backfired and he delivered a stunningly compelling, persuasive case for political change.

This was the Labour leader at his very best, passionately and repeatedly making the strong case for Labour while exposing the chaos, weakness and incompetence of Rishi Sunak and a politically bankrupt Conservative Party. Even many critics were impressed by his strong keynote performance in Liverpool at Labour’s annual conference and the confidence, vision and drive of Starmer at the head of a largely disciplined, united Labour Party are a world away from the desperation of Sunak and division of warring Tories.

Momentum and the yearning for change are powerful political forces and impressive Starmer emphasising why both are in Labour’s favour give hope that when a General Election is held next year, whether in the Spring or Autumn, he is likely to be Prime Minister and form a UK Government. Change is coming.

Horrors of war

With Hamas firing rockets at the Israeli southern city of Ashkelon and Israeli jets continuing to bomb the Gaza Strip, the terrible conflict in this blighted corner of the Middle East is intensifying. The horrors of a grim war are claiming lives of innocent civilians on both sides and the fate of Israeli hostages seized by Hamas give cause for grave concern.

With little appetite on both sides for a ceasefire never mind a permanent peace, much fresh blood may be shed in a confrontation seemingly without an immediate end. The unforgivable massacre of Israelis by Hamas terrorists was a crime that must be condemned unreservedly yet in pursuing those responsible it must be hoped that the Israeli military is proportionate or the lives of Palestinian civilians will also be taken cruelly.

Poisoning the well

Hugely popular TV presenter Holly Willoughby quitting This Morning will be felt deeply by all those who are abused and hounded. Hate campaigns and sinister threats against successful women in public life are a growing poison we either stem immediately or the rapid spread of the toxin will claim fresh victims and Britain would be a much nastier, poorer country as a result.
