How the mighty have fallen - as Netflix has chosen to cancel its popular drama series Vikings: Valhalla after three seasons.

With a superb 95 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the show first aired in February 2022 and quickly became a hit with viewers, with many eagerly awaiting the upcoming third series. The visceral drama has followed the exploits of the legendary lives of explorer Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett), Nordic prince Harold Sigurdsson (Leo Suter) and Leif’s sister Freydis Eriksdotter (Frida Gastavsson).

But sadly all good things come to an end, with the Viking longship now running aground in 2024 in what will be the final season. Co-creator Jeb Stuart told Variety he was ‘grateful’ for the time he’s had working on the show.

He said: "I am so grateful to have had three seasons to tell the stories of Leif, Harald and Freydis. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to show the evolution of how three of the most famous Vikings became the icons we know today and we have done just that."

He added he wants viewers to enjoy the ‘new heights’ the heroes have reached in the latest episodes: "I hope when the audience gets to see the new season, they’ll be excited by all the new heights that we’ve taken these heroes. When we started this project five years ago, I worked hard with this incredible cast and crew to craft a journey that we all hoped would be satisfying."

Mud: "Final? It feels like it just came out."

Abubakar sajid: "What do you mean finale? I want more seasons".

The Blast: "Not happy with the final."

David Lepp: "I'm going to miss the show".

Fireheart: "Three seasons ain't enough".

Blot Enthusiast: "Why even watch shows anymore? If one you like comes out, they (Netflix) are just going to kill it before it even has a chance."

What the critics say

Erin Maxwell of L.A Weekly says: "Valhalla's biography and butchery is good enough to hold the interest of folks who don't mind more fiction than facts in their historical dramas, and prefer bloody beatdowns, bodice rippings and unwashed romps to accuracy or reality."

Alci Rengifo, of Entertainment Voice, said: “Valhalla hits the spot for a testosterone-pumped warlord adventure."

Caroline Framke of Variety: "The show can sometimes feel like a montage of strapping, bearded men introducing themselves to each other... But “Valhalla” also demonstrates enough ambition and handle on its characters and pivotal time period to justify diving into its world."
