PS Plus Premium subscribers are getting an extra benefit as a part of their subscription as the Sony Pictures Core app joins the service.

PS Plus Premium is the top-tier of the PlayStation subscription service. Premium gets all of the PS Plus Essential games (like The Callisto Protocol and Weird West in the PS Plus Essential October 2023 lineup) and everything included in PS Plus Extra (which is being revealed later this week ), as well as access to game trials and classic titles exclusive to Premium. Now PS Plus Premium subscribers are getting access to an extra benefit with the new Sony Pictures Core app.

Sony Pictures Core – formerly known as Bravia Core – is Sony's movie streaming service, featuring movies from the Sony Pictures catalogue. Sony Pictures Core will allow you to buy or rent movies, with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Morbius, and Bullet Train among the featured titles. Users will also be able to pick up Sony films before they come to other services, with the film adaption of Gran Turismo being available currently.

However, Sony announced on the PlayStation Blog that PS Plus Premium subscribers will get access to a list of up to 100 curated films as a part of their subscription. The films included in this list include Looper, Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy 15, Elysium, and Resident Evil Damnation. These movies will be available without ads and updated periodically.

A 'premium' selection

It's nice to see Sony adding value to the frankly overpriced PS Plus Premium (which was made even worse after the PS Plus price increase last month). The lacklustre classics catalogue – which still hasn't added a new PS2 game that wasn't already on PS4 – and some game trials really isn't worth the extra £20 / $25 / AU$39.22 a month over PS Plus Extra which grants you the game catalogue (which is where the real meat is).

And yes, while it's nice that Sony is offering a free extra benefit for PS Plus Premium subscribers, if Looper, Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy 15, Elysium, and Resident Evil Damnation are the films it's using to advertise this benefit, I can't say I have high hopes for the quality of the 100 films included in the PS Plus Premium selection.
