Wrexham’s record-breaking campaign in the National League could be under threat after just one season.

With the help of US owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Wrexham managed to achieve promotion to the English Football League for the first time in 15 years. The Red Dragons won the National League title in 2022/23 with a record 111 points to lift the title and achieve promotion.

Notts County finished second in the National League last season with 107 points, narrowly missing out on automatic promotion. The Magpies were able to join Wrexham in moving up to League Two thanks to a victory in the play-off final over Chesterfield Town.

It’s last season’s play-off finalists that may have an eye on breaking the record set by Wrexham in 2022/23. Chesterfield are currently top of the National League in what is their sixth season in the fifth tier of English football.

The Spireites are currently top of the National League table with 38 points from the first 15 games of the season. With 12 wins, two draws and only one defeat, Chesterfield are on course to break the record set by Wrexham if they maintain the current pace of points for the remainder of the season.

Across the whole of 2022/23, Wrexham averaged 2.41 points per game. At the moment, Chesterfield are averaging 2.51 points per game and would earn a total of 116 points by the end of the campaign were they to maintain the current pace.

Wrexham have been enjoying their first season back in the EFL for more than a decade this campaign. After 12 games, Phil Parkinson’s team lie in seventh place in the League Two table with five wins and just two defeats.

Those two defeats both saw Wrexham concede five goals - a 5-3 loss to MK Dons on the opening day, and a 5-0 hammering at the hands of Stockport County on September 23.

Most recently Wrexham claimed a 1-0 win over Crawley to move into the play-off spots in League Two. Ollie Palmer scored the only goal of the game, whilst midfielder Andy Cannon was sent off in the second half as Wrexham had to play half an hour with just 10 men.

Reynolds took to social media via X, formerly known as Twitter, after Wrexham managed to hold on for the victory. In his tongue-in-cheek tone, the Hollywood actor wrote: “@Wrexham_AFC is the leading cause of heart attacks in my chest”.
