It is a situation where we all like to think we would tell the truth if we ever found ourselves in it, but what happens when this could cost you your job? One nanny has found herself in this exact predicament - scared she has lost her job for good over confessing the truth to one of her employers.

The 23-year-old nanny was recently in a restaurant with her boyfriend when she spotted the child's dad kissing a woman who she says was definitely not the child's mum. Left with a dilemma over whether the child's mum needed to be told about what she had witnessed - the nanny is now wondering if she made the right decision.

Taking to Reddit, she explained how as soon as she saw the kiss she made her boyfriend leave the restaurant. She also added how she had known the family since the child was one month old so knew them really well. The incident happened on a Saturday evening with the poster admitting to agonising over what to do the following day.

In her post, she admitted to telling the child's mum about what she had seen on the Monday morning. She added: "I walked in, took a deep breath, and just explained what I had seen. I was hoping maybe she'd tell me that their relationship was open, or they were already separating, but unfortunately, that's not what happened.

"She immediately got tears in her eyes and was just shaking her head in disbelief, and she kept asking me if I was SURE that I had seen him. I told her yes, and she left to work still crying." However, despite the nanny thinking she was doing what was best, she finished her post by explaining that the child's mum returned from work and was "cold" with her and she hasn't spoken to her since.

The post finished: "I got a text later on that evening saying that she and C were going to stay with her parents for a week or two and that she wouldn’t be needing me to nanny until they got back. I haven't received any further communication from her."

The nanny was left asking if she was an a**hole for telling the truth but many people rushed to her defence. Commenting underneath the post, one user said: "You did the right thing but you'll probably have to deal with fallout too. Sometimes doing the right thing has negative consequences." Another said: "The family may be disintegrating so you may not have a nanny job anymore but that isn't your fault. You did the right thing. If I was the wife, I would want to be told."

A third added: "The messenger is always the bad guy. I’m sorry you learned the hard way that doing the right thing doesn’t always pan out well."
