David Beckham documentary 'inspired' Man Utd's dramatic win over Brentford

Scott McTominay credited the new David Beckham documentary as the inspiration behind his match-winning cameo in Manchester United 's 2-1 win over Brentford.

The Red Devils were behind when McTominay, 26, was introduced from the bench by Erik ten Hag late in the second half. And the Scotland international had a seismic impact on the game, netting twice in quick succession during stoppage time to complete the most remarkable of turnarounds.

McTominay's dramatic late double invoked memories of some of the last-gasp triumphs that were achieved during the legendary reign of Sir Alex Ferguson. And he revealed that he had been inspired by some of those moments after watching the documentary charting Beckham's career the night before Saturday afternoon's game.

Reacting after the final whistle, McTominay said: “Two goals at the death was incredible — that might be one of my favourite moments on a football pitch.

“It’s hard to put into words because I’ve been at Man United my whole life, since I was five years old. For me, this football club means everything. I was watching David Beckham’s documentary last night and it’s things like that that inspire. [Sir Alex] was always looking at his watch like that. It just shows today you can score a last-minute winner. It’s brilliant.”

Ten Hag turned to McTominay with United chasing an equaliser. And the raucous home crowd's backing meant that McTominay couldn't actually hear the instructions the Dutchman gave him before coming on. He added: “It was very loud. The fans were roaring us on so I couldn’t hear fully. He probably said something like, 'Go on and score' which is what I did.”

Ten Hag almost sold McTominay during the summer transfer window after the homegrown star was deemed surplus to requirements. And the irony of his intervention wasn't lost on the Old Trafford chief, who desperately needed a win after overseeing the club's worst start to a season for 37 years.

Ten Hag said: “Every player has his price but he has a big value, sporting and also economic. No-one matched that value and I am happy to have a player like Scott McTominay in the squad. He is Man Utd in every way. Every minute he will fight for the team.

“These games give fuel to the dressing room. They know how far they have to go to get results. In football it is eat or get eaten. Too many times in the first half of this season we got eaten by opponents who are more hungry. This can’t be, it has to go away.

"Every player has to deliver that in every second he is on the pitch. That is the demand. We were not always determined on every occasion in games, and you get hammered for it. This has to change.”
