Bruno Fernandes laughs off Man Utd 'crisis' after comeback win over Brentford

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has suggested that his side are held to different standards after they produced a dramatic comeback to beat Brentford.

United appeared to be on the way to a third straight defeat at Old Trafford after Andre Onana let Mathias Jensen’s tame shot into the net. But Scott McTominay came off the bench in the 87th minute to score twice in added time to win it 2-1 and ease the pressure on Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman had demanded a response from his side after the 3-2 defeat by Galatasaray handed them their worst start to a season for 37 years, with five defeats in their last seven games in all competitions. United were booed off by the Old Trafford crowd at half-time and needed two goals from McTominay to secure their fourth win from eight Premier League games.

Fernandes was delighted with the win but also took aim at United’s critics, suggesting their recent form did not warrant the negative coverage they’ve received. “This is Manchester United. Even if you win 10 games in a row and lose one, it's a crisis straight away,” he told ViaPlay. “We are not having the results and points we want to have but it's about getting the focus back after the international break."

Match-winner McTominay made a similar point in his post-match interview. He told Premier League Productions: "When you are not doing well at this football club, everyone is against you. It feels like we are in our own bubble with the rest of the world saying negative things.”

United are 10th in the Premier League with 12 points from eight games. They are also bottom of Group A in the Champions League following defeats by Bayern Munich and Galatasaray.

Ten Hag made two changes for the Brentford game, bringing in Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans for Raphael Varane and Hannibal Mejbri. The changes didn’t have the desired effect, with United going into the break 1-0 down after Onana pushed Jensen’s long-shot into the bottom corner.

Everything changed at the death, with McTominay controlling and firing into the bottom corner after Kristoffer Ajer failed to clear. He grabbed the winner minutes later from Maguire’s flick-on.

Asked about the result, the Scottish midfielder replied: “Massive. Everyone knows we are in a difficult period at the minute, but we have fighters in the group that want to keep going right until the end. It could have been anyone on that pitch scoring the two goals. Really pleased and hopefully we can build on that from here.”

United now have a two-week international break to take stock before travelling to Sheffield United on October 21. Fixtures against FC Copenhagen in the Champions League and the Manchester derby against rivals Manchester City will follow to close out the month.
