Popularity is constantly fluctuating when it comes to baby names. It all depends on what gets people talking in a given year, with many parents choosing to name their children after fictional characters that have made an impact on their lives, or even taking inspiration from the names celebrities have given their children.

However, predicting the biggest baby name trends in any year is never an easy task, and according to name experts, there are some trends that have emerged in 2023 that they never saw coming. The experts at BabyCentre recently told The Mirror that names inspired by the Wild West seem to be increasingly popular this year, and there's one name in particular that parents just can't stop searching for when it comes to naming a little cowboy - Butch.

According to BabyCentre's US website, Butch is currently the 6,374th most popular baby name in the US, and while that might not seem particularly popular, you can see the trend starting to form when you consider it's moved up a staggering 2,467 places since 2022. The name does not return any search results when put into BabyCentre's UK website, however.

BabyNames considers the name Butch to be gender-neutral but does note that the moniker carries the meaning of "manly" so that should be taken into consideration when bestowing it on your new arrival. The website also states the name was "originally a nickname for Butcher" but has since become more popular as a moniker in its own right.

When it comes to the Wild West theme, Butch will ring a bell for anyone familiar with the 1969 Western film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, where the titular characters were played by Paul Newman and Robert Redford respectively. The film is based loosely on fact, and tells the story of two Wild West outlaws who are on the run after a string of train robberies.

Meanwhile, Butch isn't the only name that has seen a rise in popularity recently, as we previously reported that more parents are also looking to call their sons Blake. In data released last year by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), Blake was the 74th most popular baby name for boys in England and Wales, marking a new entry on the list for the once-unusual name.

Blake wasn't alone in the ONS data either, as Brody, Kai, Rupert, Tobias and Nathan all found themselves bagging spots in the top 100, with Rupert and Brody making their top 100 debut. For girls, Lara, Beatrice and Sara were the new entries.
