Trey Lance was traded from the San Francisco 49ers. to the Dallas Cowboys during the offseason, and the teams go head-to-head on Sunday night in Week 5 of the NFL season.

The quarterback is predictably the centre of attention, despite his status as backup to Dallas starter Dak Prescott and he has revealed how he’s helped prepare his new teammates to face his former team.

Lance ended a disappointing and injury-plagued two years in San Francisco this summer. The former No.3 overall pick is yet to get on the field with the Cowboys this season.

Prior to being traded, Lance was battling with Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold for the starting quarterback spot with the Niners. However, after being told he would be third-choice, the 23-year-old was traded to Dallas to start a new chapter of his NFL career.

Now Lance is in Dallas and will be returning to the home of his former team when the Cowboys travel to Niners at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday, although Lance is not expected to get on the field unless there is an injury or fitness concern for Prescott.

Even so, Lance has explained how he has been helping his teammates in Dallas prepare to face his old team in San Francisco this past week. While acknowledging that the Cowboys will have their own preparations and analysis on the Niners, Lance says that he has been offering his own expertise on his former team.

"I'm doing everything I can to help," Lance said via the . "But at the same time, these guys have done a lot of prep on the Niners with those big games the last two years, so they know a lot about the offense.

“But, I mean, I'm here now so I'm doing everything I can to try and help. Any time I can have a bigger role to help the team, help Dak out, it's exciting for sure."

Lance’s work has not gone unnoticed, with fellow quarterback Prescott acknowledging the impact that the third-year QB has made off the field. Even though he has been watching the Niners film in the week, Prescott says the added insight from Lance has been valuable.

"He's been very helpful, honestly," said Prescott. "Just in the way their defense can move, certain calls they may have to make if we put them in certain positions.

“Things you kinda see on film but getting some definitive answers from him on how they did things, he's been very helpful."
