Man tells pregnant girlfriend she's 'overacting' over his 'dangerous' habit

Some hobbies are just more dangerous than others and we can't always blame our loved ones for wanting us to be safe and wishing we'd kick the potentially dangerous habits in favour of something a little bit healthier. From eating an unhealthy diet to extreme sports, no one wants to see someone they love in harms way, but some habits will always die harder than others.

This was the dilemma one man found himself in when his pregnant girlfriend made it clear she wasn't supportive of one of his long term hobbies: riding a motorcycle. Known to be a more dangerous vehicle than a car, because the driver is more exposed, the woman expected her partner to give up his beloved hobby because of impending new role as a father.

The man, who took to Reddit to discuss his dilemma and ask for opinions on what his next move should be explained: "So me and my [girlfriend] have been trying to have a kid and we have been successful and she's currently 2 months pregnant. We were just hanging out and the she told me that she expected me to sell my motorcycle soon cause it was just too dangerous of a hobby to have as a soon to be dad."

He went on to explain that he had been riding a motorbike for a decade and been "perfectly fine" so he wasn't going to agree to sell his motorcycle and that she was "just overreacting." However, this didn't seem to go down well with his girlfriend.

"She told me that this was something she wasn't going to budge on and that I had to do it. I told her that it wasn't her choice to make and I wasn't going to give up my hobbies just because I was about to become a dad and that she should have brought this up back when we decided to start trying for a kid."

The man's post caused a lot of debate and commenters were quite split on whether or not he was in the right to refuse to give up his motorcycle. One wrote that the poster had lost them "at the 'I'm not going to give up my hobbies just because I'm a dad.' line. I mean, yes dude, you absolutely are. A new baby, a first baby especially, is all consuming. I wouldn't be asking (let alone telling) him to sell his bike but he's got to realise he'll have s*d all time to go riding."

Another commenter noted that they didn't "want to judge" but shared their own experience. "I lost my brother in a motorcycling accident - who was a young dad of two very small kids at the time - so I kind of get where your GF is coming from. The thing with motorcycle accidents is that it's hardly ever is about a lack of skill or safety measures taken by the motorcyclist, and more often than not about dangerous behaviours by others. You're so damn vulnerable on a motorcycle!"

However, some commenters were completely on the man's side, with one saying that his girlfriend "should have mentioned this was a dealbreaker for her" already, but that they understood her general concern about the danger of the hobby.
