Dermot O'Leary asks Rishi Sunak if he's 'ashamed' of Suella's immigration speech

Dermot O'Leary grilled Rishi Sunak on This Morning over Suella Braverman's immigration speech at the Tory Party conference in which she warned of a "hurricane of mass migration".

Dermot remarked: "I want to talk about immigration and multiculturalism because this is something me and Alison care about, we're both children of immigrants, as are you. So, when you hear your home secretary talk about the hurricane of mass migration are you not embarrassed and ashamed when you hear words like that?

"It's the first time I've met you, you seem like a decent guy through us it's evidence that multiculturalism does work so do you not scratch your head when you hear things like that?" Rishi replied: "I think this debate gets charged a lot with people focussing on things so let's take a step back.

"What do I think we all agree on? We all agree that Britain is incredibly welcoming place, we're all living proof of the fact that immigrants can come here, can do well and that is something we do better than any other country in the world."

Interjecting, Alison quipped: "So we definitely haven't failed in any way I would suggest," to which Rishi continued: "No, I think this is something we should be so proud of as Brits, it's something we do better than anyone else. But, I think we agree that when people do come here, they should integrate, they should sign up to British values so we have that shared understanding among us, that's really important."

This Morning viewers praised Dermot's line of questioning as one tweeted: "Dermot is obviously pissed off about Bravermans comments. Good for him #ThisMorning." Another shared: "Dermot is gonna fight Rishi Sunak pass it on #ThisMorning," while a third wrote: "Dermot actually giving Sunak some decent questions. Thank god for Dermot <3 #ThisMorning."

However, other viewers felt Alison and Dermot could have pushed the Prime Minister further. The hosts ended the interview by asking Mr Sunak a series of quick fire questions including if he had watched Oppenheimer or the Barbie Movie.

One frustrated viewer twe6ted: "Dermot and Alison not doing themselves any favours here - they're much more capable than this. #ThisMorning," while another said: "So Dermot and Alison had to rush the interview because they were running out of time … so they could squeeze in a cringey quiz about nothing. In fairness Dermot did try to challenge Sunak a bit but obviously had to speed through that to ask about Barbie! #thismorning."
