A baby shower should be one of the happiest times in an expectant mum's pregnancy, surrounded by her friends and family as she celebrates and prepares to welcome new life into the world (and gets to eat lots of cake).

However, for one mum, it was anything but because of her mother-in-law who apparently wanted to be paid to prepare the food for the 'happy' occasion - from the unborn baby's bank account. The mum refused and said she would pay for caterers to provide the party grub, which angered the gran-to-be so much she cancelled the shower - behind her daughter-in-law's back.

This wasn't really much of a surprise for the woman though because her inherited mum "was always being really horrible to her" despite her helping her out financially by paying her phone bill.

In a post on Reddit, she vented: "This was a constant occurrence. She was always calling her family members to talk bad about me and so they started treated (sic) me differently as well. What my MIL didn't tell everyone was that not only was her phone in my name but I paid the bill."

To get her revenge the scorned woman went online and changed the name of her mother-in-law's phone name back to hers so when she called people, it was her daughter-in-law's name that popped up. "She was annoyed and was complaining to me how nobody was picking up her calls. it took her forever to realize (sic) and I was silently jumping for joy whenever she complained."

In further added edits to the post, the woman explained that this incident, of which there much worse, had happened in the past and she has been with her husband for 20 years. She said the mother-in-law only behaved like this for the first 16 years of her marriage to her son and she believed it was because of cultural issues.

Despite the rocky relationship with her mum-in-law, she said they are "now good" and she was just trying to see the funny side of a difficult situation. "She is still crazy but I learned how to set boundaries and stand up for myself," she added. "Yes this was passive aggressive but it was the best my younger self could do. Also, please remember I was just trying to make light of a bad situation. Gotta get your chuckles in where you can."

Readers responding to the absurd situation posed questions to the woman, with one logically asking: "Curious, why would you pay her phone bill and not just cut her off. Also, what does your husband do about his mother being a pain in the a**?"

The original poster responded by saying her husband does nothing and explains why they paid the bill: "Everyone in the family knows she's a bully but stick up for her. It's so infuriating. As for the bill, we payed (sic) it to help out my FIL. He's a super hard working guy. MIL has never worked."

Another commenter suggested a member of the family needs to speak to the mother-in-law: "Has anyone passed along to dear old dad exactly what a b***h he married? And that everyone has to walk on eggshells around her or she will let her claws out??? Might work better if it was a sibling of his."

The woman replied to them to explain that "everyone knows" what she's like but added another awful detail about her in: "It's funny you mention claws, she done that in the past more than once. I’ve seen her claw both her husband and son’s faces when angered."

Other users related to the woman and shared similar stories of paying for in-law's bills, while one suggested the final act of revenge could have been making an additional change to the phone line. "I would be even pettier," they said. "i would put on restriction like a child as in time restrictions etc." To which the woman replied: "That's brilliant."
