A British tourist in his seventies has died after climbing more than 800 steps to an Italian church, it has been reported.

The man, whose name has not been released by authorities, is reported to have hiked 842 steps to the hillside church near Portofino before collapsing on Tuesday, Mail Online reports. The man reportedly collapsed in the churchyard of hamlet San Rocco, with emergency services called to the scene.

Medics were seen trying to resuscitate the walker, but sadly to no avail. It's currently unknown whether the man's loved ones have been informed of the tragic news.

San Rocco is a small village on the side of Mount Portofino, which sits above the town with the same name on the Italian Riviera, and it's understood the hiker had begun his walk from nearby Camogli. The area is popular with tourists and hikers.
