Christian Eriksen hit the nail on the head by pointing out Manchester United's familiar failing following their calamitous 3-2 loss at home to Galatasaray.

The Red Devils twice took the lead at Old Trafford through new £72million striker Rasmus Hojlund, only concede three goals and lose their second Champions League group game. Galatasaray even missed a second-half penalty which was awarded when Casemiro fouled Dries Mertens and was sent off, but Mauro Icardi made amends by chipping United goalkeeper Andre Onana for the winner.

Post-match, Eriksen fronted up and explained that United's tendency to concede a goal shortly after a scoring one was once again key to their downfall, having done so previously this season to leave them on a run of five losses in seven games.

"I think we had some good spells in the game, but at the moment when we go ahead, we always seem to concede shortly after," the Danish midfielder told TNT Sports. "Of course, that makes it very difficult for us to keep control of the game and that's something that we have to change very quickly.

"I don't think it's the confidence, it's more the lack of awareness and sharpness to really keep ourselves in form and stay ahead twice - we shouldn't be throwing that away and we've done that in other games this season. So I don't think it's a lack of confidence, we're just making the wrong decisions at the wrong times and it's costing us."

Rio Ferdinand echoed Eriksen's concerning sentiment, saying: "One minute I'm as high as a kite and the next I'm in despair.

Fellow Red Devils legend Paul Scholes argued that the performance wasn't the worst United have put in this term, adding: "Disappointed. I don't think Manchester United played that badly, but all the talk before the game was a lack of goals in the team. We disregarded the defensive side of the game, It is not good enough they were all over the place."

Having lost 4-3 away to Bayern Munich in their opening Champions League match, Tuesday's result leaves United bottom of Group A after two games, facing Copenhagen in their next fixture. This Saturday in the Premier League, the Red Devils welcome Brentford to Old Trafford, desperate to get back to winning ways.
