Chelsea lead the way with Championship tactic compared to Premier League rivals
Premier League big-spenders Chelsea lead the way when it comes to bringing in transfer fees after blooding youngsters in the Championship, new figures have revealed.
The Blues have attracted attention for their outlay in the transfer market, with more than £1bn splashed out on new players since Todd Boehly took over from Roman Abramovich in 2022. They have not generated the results to match, though, currently sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League table after finishing 12th last term.
Still, the London side have made good use of the loan market in recent years, especially when it comes to sending players to the Championship. The Blues have recouped £166m with the sales of players who they first loaned to the second tier, while they've also used the Championship to develop academy talents to the point that they are ready for first-team action.
According to Squawka, using Opta and Transfermarkt data, Chelsea sent 29 players aged 22 or younger on loan to the Championship in the last five full seasons. There have been further loan moves this term, with Cesare Casadei among a handful of youngsters spending the season in the second tier, while more may follow in January.
That figure represents a Premier League high over the five-year period in question, with Manchester City close behind. Chelsea also lead the way when it comes to the number of minutes earned by said players in the Championship, suggesting they regularly find the right loan destinations for their players.

A prime example of this is Tammy Abraham, who played 40 games on loan at Aston Villa in 2018-19 before returning to play his part for Chelsea's first team. The England international striker was later sold to Roma for around £40m, part of the nine-figure sum recouped by the London side for players who first racked up Championship minutes.

Former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham thrived on loan at Aston Villa (Getty Images)Chelsea have recouped the sum through the sale of six players, while a further six left for nothing after Championship loans. Abraham is one of four to fetch an eight-figure fee after time spent in the second tier, along with Mason Mount (who spent a season on loan at Derby), Fikayo Tomori (also Derby) and Marc Guehi (Swansea).
Liverpool and Brighton are second and third on the list, each recouping more than £70m. The stand-out sales from those clubs include Neco Williams (loaned to Fulham, sold to Nottingham Forest for £17m) and Ben White (loaned to Leeds, sold to Arsenal for £50m).
Other big-money sales of former Championship loanees include Harvey Barnes' summer move to Newcastle. Leicester recouped £38m for the England international, who thrived for the Foxes after impressing on loan at West Brom as a youngster, while Arsenal brought in £30m for Folarin Balogun after the striker's successful Middlesbrough loan back in 2021-22.
Chelsea have also benefited from plenty of league minutes from former Championship loanees. Mount and Abraham both featured regularly before being sold, while current captain Reece James starred on loan at Wigan in the 2018-19 season.
The Blues' loan stars this season have all started picking up minutes. Casadei scored on his Leicester debut back in August and Omari Hutchinson has two goals in 10 games for Ipswich, though Mason Burstow and Bashir Humphreys have featured less after making their loan moves later than their colleagues.
Plenty of loanees past and present impressed last season, with Amad leading Sunderland to the play-offs after joining on loan from Man Utd. This season has seen Jack Clarke impress for the same side having once been a Championship loanee while on Spurs' books, and the trend may well continue.
