NASA has said in a statement it will "maintain the people to protect life and property" in the event of a government shutdown.

During a government shutdown, NASA, like other federal agencies, faces disruptions. Non-essential employees may be furloughed, leading to delays in research, development, and planned missions. Space launches, maintenance, and collaborations can also be affected.

A statement from NASA Administrator Bill Nelson read: “If House Republicans force a shutdown, it will have devastating consequences for NASA, families across the country, and America’s global competitiveness.”

“We are deciding what actions are needed in the event of a congressional Republican-led government shutdown. NASA will maintain the people to protect life and property – operational missions, such as satellites, landers, and rovers, as well as the International Space Station and its crew.”

A government shutdown first leads to the furlough of many NASA employees, except those deemed essential for reasons of safety or protection of property. This means a large portion of NASA's workforce, including scientists, engineers, and administrative staff, is temporarily not working, disrupting the agency's day-to-day operations.

Ongoing projects and missions may be put on hold or operate with minimal staffing, affecting critical tasks such as data analysis, spacecraft monitoring, and research activities. Missions in progress, especially those requiring constant monitoring and communication with spacecraft, face challenges as the workforce is reduced to essential personnel only.

Additionally, new projects and research initiatives may be delayed or halted entirely during a government shutdown. NASA relies on consistent funding to plan and execute its missions, and a lack of funds hampers the agency's ability to initiate new projects or continue research and development efforts.

Furthermore, collaborations with international partners and other research institutions may also be affected. Delays in NASA's projects can cause scheduling conflicts and affect the timelines of joint international missions, leading to strains in international relationships and scientific partnerships.

Essential functions, especially those related to safety, continue, but the shutdown's exact impact depends on its duration and budgetary provisions. Critical activities like the operation of the International Space Station (ISS) and monitoring of space objects that could pose a threat to Earth are also likely to continue.
