The New York Jets have not signed a replacement for Aaron Rodgers and it has emerged salary cap concerns may have been a factor.

The AFC East team went all out in the offseason to sign the 39-year-old, one of the best quarterbacks of all time. In July the 2011 Super Bowl winner agreed to a revised two-year, £58million ($75M) contract with the Jets, a $35 million decrease from his original deal. Therefore, his 2023 cap number shrunk to $8.9 million, which equates to just 3.9% of the Jets' cap salary.

He was due to make close to £85m ($110m) in guarantees on his original contract, but his new deal will allow the franchise more financial flexibility over the next two seasons. But according to a CBS Sports, despite reducing the amount of money the former league MVP was due to receive, the Jets have budget concerns after acquiring him.

They have spent $280 million, the second-highest amount of money in the league this season and feel that other teams don't usually trade away quality players easily. With spending at a limit, the Jets looked to Matt Ryan and Chad Henne to step in and fill the spot left by Rodgers after he suffered a season-ending injury in the first game of the season.

Ryan, who is currently a free agent and an analyst with CBS Sports, said he has no interest in playing for the franchise. It is contrary to a report by FOX Sports that claimed Ryan reached out to the Jets but the team turned him down.

He confirmed he was not interested in playing for New York when he said: “No, not on my end,” and added he’s enjoying working with his CBS broadcast crew. “I’ve got no interest in doing that right now. I’m enjoying what I’m doing.” In an interview with the Reading Eagle on September 17, Henne revealed that he was contacted by the Jets regarding a return.

But the 38-year-old, who retired after winning his second Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs in February, is happy with his current role as a volunteer assistant football coach at Wilson High School in Pennsylvania. "I hung them up for the right reasons," he said. "I didn't want to go back and put my body into it."

With the Jets all out of options, they had no choice but to give Zach Wilson another chance at the starting QB, even though he was demoted twice last season. While the franchise managed to defeat the Bills in overtime when Wilson replaced Rodgers, since he returned to the starting lineup, they have suffered two consecutive defeats.

Coach Saleh had stated his support for Wilson for the 2023 campaign and absolved him of the sole responsibility for Sunday's loss to the New England Patriots. But that stance may have now changed based on comments when asked about Wilson’s current form this week. “We all acknowledge he has to play better. We all acknowledge that,” Saleh told reporters on Wednesday, via The New York Post.

“He acknowledges it, teammates acknowledge it, he acknowledges it himself, but the key is to have confidence in yourself. You have to.” Through the first three games of the season, the Jets offense are averaging just 14 points and their predictable play-calling has made life slightly easier for their opponents to snuff out their attacks.

Wilson completed just 50% of his passes for 157 yards with zero touchdowns and zero interceptions on Sunday. Over the course of the first three games, Wilson has the lowest passer rating by a quarterback this season at 57.0. He is currently on pace to have the worst three-year stretch by a quarterback in NFL history.
