Weeds can be the bane of a garden enthusiast's life, taking up space and choking your carefully selected plants and blooms. Letting up briefly in the cold, winter months before they begin to grow again in spring and continue to do so until the late autumn, it can feel like there isn't much reprieve from getting down on your hands and knees and pulling them out.

Plants like bindweed wrap themselves tightly around everything you've chosen for your garden and require repeated digging out and to be carefully unwrapped from things you do want to grow, so not to damage your plants.

While there are an abundance of weed killers on the market, the harsh chemicals used in pesticides can quite easily damage other plants, so they are not to every gardener's taste. However, there is an easy and natural method available to quell any weed issues you might be facing: ground cover plants.

One garden enthusiast took to the Gardening UK Facebook page asking for assistance on what were the best ground cover plants to opt for which will keep weeds at bay, the Express reports. Other keen gardeners were quick to respond with suggestions, with one plant a stand out option amongst the comments, geraniums.

"Ground cover plants like geraniums look beautiful, but also put an end to the most stubborn of weeds," one commenter advised. Another added: "Ground cover helps crowd them out, reduces soil space for weeds to settle and establish. I love hardy geranium. So easy. Snip it back and it leafs up and reflowers."

The Royal Horiticultural Society also advise that some types of perennial geraniums are incredibly helpful at keeping weeds at bay, whilst also making a beautiful addition to your garden. They said: "The prime requisite of a good ground cover plant is to provide a rapid, dense cover, to suppress germination and development of weed seeds and to eliminate the need for weed control measures. Such plants are usually evergreens or have densely twiggy growth."

They advise opting for the 'Ingwersen's Variety', which features pale pink inner petals that beautifully contrast with deep pink outer ones, or alternatively the 'Russell Prichard' variety - a trailing herbaceous geranium with 3cm wide magenta flowers that appear in the summer.

The experts at Gardener's World also say that geraniums are really "easy to grow" noting that they are a popular choice because they also provide a "a burst of colour or fragrance throughout summer". However, if geraniums aren't your cup of tea there are some other options of ground cover plants that help to keep weeds away, including 'Rosa Flower Carpet' varieties and evergreen shrubs.
