EastEnders' Ben Mitchell actor Max Bowden has teased he knows the identity of the Christmas murder victim, even throwing a name out there.

While he quickly downplayed the claims and suggested the cast still had no idea who dies on Christmas Day this year, he hinted that his onscreen father Phil Mitchell could be killed off, amid theories he will die in a major twist. Ben's father Phil has been on the BBC soap since 1990, and has been played by actor Steve McFadden since then.

A recent episode teased he was going to die though, after he ended up with the mystery cufflinks that the dead character will be wearing when they meet a grisly end. Asked about the big Christmas twist, Max told The Mirror in an exclusive chat at the Inside Soap Awards that it could well be Phil - while he quickly made it clear he was joking.

Max then addressed a worrying theory that his character's husband Callum Highway might be the death in a major twist, joking he would leave the soap if this was to happen. The fact he doesn't know who dies and him sharing doubt about the victim being Callum could be enough to suggest the pair have been ruled out.

After all, would soap boss Chris Clenshaw really tear apart Ballum, especially if it could lead to Ben leaving the soap too? Viewers saw a flashforward clip in February that detailed a mystery male character will be killed in The Queen Vic on Christmas Day, with six female characters at the scene of the crime.

In the scene this Christmas, Denise Fox, Suki Panesar, Stacey Slater, Kathy Beale, Sharon Watts and Linda Carter are stood over a dead body in The Queen Vic, while the male's identity is not known. It seems like a showdown has occurred as all the women are either covered in blood or their clothes are ripped.

Rumoured victims asides Phil include Theo Hawthorne, Jack Branning, Ravi Gulati, Rocky Cotton, Nish Panesar, Martin Fowler and Dean Wicks. Phil was seen wearing the cufflinks in a recent episode, leading to viewers wondering if he is the victim - but there's still time for them to make their way into the hands of someone else.

After joking about Phil being the death, Max said of the theories surrounding a possible demise for Callum: "If it's Callum, give me my P45 because Ben doesn't work without Callum. I would hate a world in which I don't work with Tony Clay. We all speculate but none of us have any idea who the hell it is, but that's why it's so gripping. If the cast haven't got a clue then the viewers are buggered!"

It comes after viewers shared their fears that Callum could die. Taking to Twitter, one fan wrote: "What if the reason tony clay didn’t go to the NTAs was because Callum ’s the body at Christmas ?? I hope not." Another said: "Everybody knows that it is Callum who is wearing the #cufflinks at Christmas," while a third tweeted: "Why are SO many people saying that the dead body at Christmas is Callum?"
