Virgin Media scraps popular broadband plan leaving customers facing higher bills
If you've recently been checking out Virgin Media's broadband deals pages you may have noticed a pretty significant change has taken place. Until recently, Virgin offered a plan called the Ultimate Oomph bundle which featured premium TV channels (including Sky Cinema and Sky Sky Sports), an unlimited O2 SIM for your smartphone along with the firm's very best 1Gbps broadband.
That ludicrously fast speed offers the ability to download a full HD movie in under 40 seconds which is mightily impressive and 10 times quicker than the UK average.
Prices for the Ultimate Oomph plan started at around £80 per month but anyone wanting to take Virgin up on this deal will now be sorely disappointed.
As spotted by the eagle-eyed team at ISPreview, Virgin has ditched Oomph in favour of a new option called the Mega Volt Bundle instead.
This package does get over 230 channels, Sky Sports, Sky Cinema, Netflix and that unlimited O2 SIM.
However, Virgin has lowered the broadband speeds down to 500Mbps (that's a 50% reduction) whilst still charging around the same price - it currently costs £85 per month to join this bundle.
Those wanting to boost things back up to 1Gbps will need to then pay an extra £6 per month taking their bills to over £90.
It's worth noting that if you have already signed up for Ultimate Oomph with 1Gbps speeds this won't change until you switch to a new deal but it will affect all new users.
It's unclear why Virgin has made this change but speaking to ISPreview a spokesperson said: “We are simplifying our broadband and TV packages to make it easier for customers to find a great-value plan that suits their needs. Existing customers will not see their package change as a result of these bundle updates unless they make a change to their services and agree a new deal with us.
"Should existing customers want to alter their package, we’re happy to review their options to ensure they can enjoy a great-value plan that suits their needs.”
As with all broadband plans, when your deal comes to an end make sure you check what your new price will be and shop around if you aren't happy.
