'Suella Braverman's multiculturalism speech was inflammatory and divisive'

It is important politicians address people’s concerns about immigration.

But it is even more important they do so in a way that is measured and based on truth and reality. Suella Braverman failed on both these counts with her inflammatory and divisive speech in the United States. The language used by the Home Secretary was deliberately provocative.

Without any supporting evidence she accused gays of trying to game the asylum system knowing full well her singling out of LGBT+ people will fan the flames of bigotry. That Ms Braverman believes her poisonous brand of politics will burnish her leadership chances only illustrates how far her party has moved to the right.

She does not speak for the majority of the country which takes pride in this nation’s diversity and wants an immigration system that is robust but also compassionate. They also want a Home Secretary who concentrates on their day job: keeping the streets safe and maintaining law and order.

Since its foundation the NHS has thrived thanks to the dedication and professionalism of its nursing staff. So we should be alarmed that so many nurses are turning their backs on the health service. A landmark study reveals the scale of the exodus with one in eight trainee nurses dropping out during training and one in five leaving within two years of starting. The findings are a reflection of the low morale among NHS staff who have been undervalued and underpaid for too long. If we care about the future of the NHS we need to care about the staff who work for it.
