Matt Lucas has reached out to Alison Hammond after she made her The Great British Bake Off debut.

The comedian got in touch with the new host after he stepped down from the show last series. Alison presented her first show on Tuesday night, however, viewing figures haven't been very impressive.

Compared to last year's launch, 100,000 less people tuned in, but that didn't put a dampener on the opening night. Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, Matt said Alison had a "warm and funny" vibe.

Matt, who announced his decision to step down from co-hosting the show in December last year, wrote: "Huge congrats on last night, Alison! You smashed it. So warm & natural & funny. Hope you are enjoying all the love xxxx".

Despite the slump in viewers, averaging out at 4.3 million, fans went wild for Alison as the new host. She presented alongside Noel Fielding as they made the bakers feel at ease.

One viewer took to Twitter to say: "Loving Alison Hammond in the tent. Perfect new host," as another wrote: "Stroke of genius bringing Alison Hammond on, she's perfect for Bake Off."

A third commented: "Alison Hammond is a great addition to #GBBO." While another declared: "Loving it, so far so good xx".

"This year's #GBBO cohort look to be fairly evenly matched, it'll be interesting to see who inches out in front in the next few weeks! Alison Hammond is such a welcome addition and her enjoyment is infection," a fan wrote.

Alison appeared on This Morning earlier in the week to talk about her new job. She said: "Obviously, I've been in the tent before, I’ve been on the baker side so I know what is like to be that nervous. But I'm gonna be honest, I have never been that nervous since I hosted first with Dermot O'Leary on the main show.

"If you think of the bigger pictures, you think this is a global show, I don’t want to ruin this. And I could you know, I’m a little bit risky!"

She went on to say that she understood the iconic role is a "massive responsibility" and that she felt "blessed and so privileged" to be given the opportunity.
