A top neuroscientist claims you can lose some belly fat faster by 'de-stressing' - but warned that the hormone that makes you put on weight is contagious.

Dr. Tara Swart say shifting some pounds could be made easier with less tension and says getting to the root of the issue is the best way to attack it. She says the stress hormone cortisol, which affects both men and women, helps to store fat around people's abdomen as a "survival mechanism".

Speaking on the Diary of a CEO podcast, she said: "Stress causes belly fat that's really hard to shift. What I would see with people is that they would say ‘Oh I've put on a bit of weight around the middle. I have to do something about it. So I've started eating less, I've started exercising more and I still can't shift it…’

“That's when I would explain this is the impact of cortisol. As long as you're still leaking out extra cortisol nothing's going to change. Even exercising more or eating better less or differently whatever it is wouldn't shift that fat," she said to Steven Bartlett, 31.

What's worse, she said the hormone is contagious. “It will leak out of our sweat around us and go into the skin of everybody else,” she claimed. The theory is backed up by science. A previous study by Yale university of 2,000 people found that stress did in fact lead to abdominal fat.

Cortisol can also have an effect on your diet, as it can create an uncontrollable urge to eat. Dr Tali says the best way to overcome the issues relating to stress is to "get to the root cause". She explained that stress "trickles down from a workplace or family group, just as it would have done centuries among our hunter gatherer forebears".

Of course, reducing stress – and avoiding people who radiate stress – isn’t the only remedy for belly fat. The NHS has a whole host of tips to help lose weight, including getting "active" for 150 minutes a week. They also suggest aiming to eat your five a day as well as swapping sugary drinks for water. Cutting down on foot that's high in sugar and fat is also recommended.

Last month, a leading health expert shared their go-to advice for those wanting to lose weight fast without sticking to a rigid diet and claims this trusted hack could lead to some pretty dramatic results. According to Abraham Khodadi, his method could lead to those watching their weight trimming as much as 5cm of belly fat in just one week, all while dropping 1 kilogram from the scales.

Pharmacist Abraham, best known to YouTube followers as @AbrahamThePharmacist, left health-conscious fans amazed after uploading an informative clip entitled 'How to lose belly fat in one week and weight fast'. In this vid, Abraham, who regularly shares accessible medical information with followers, advised slimmers that they should keep to three meals a day on this particular weight loss plan while using their hands to portion out their food.

Abraham explained: "Let me teach you the Abraham diet. So every day, you're going to have three meals, and we're gonna use these bad boys [gesturing with his hands] to portion our food groups. Carbohydrates: each meal will consist of one fist-sized portion of starchy carbohydrates. Proteins: each meal will consist of one palm-sized portion of lean protein. Vegetables or salad: each meal will consist of one cooked handful of veg or salad. Nice and simple."
