New England Patriots star Ezekiel Elliott has opened up on his return to face the Dallas Cowboys.

Elliott has entered his first season with the Patriots after signing a one-year deal worth up to $6 million (£4.9 million). The running back had been a free agent after leaving the Cowboys at the end of the 2022 season.

The 28-year-old was the sixth overall pick by the Cowboys in the 2016 NFL Draft, and worked his way to becoming one of the star players in his position. Elliott, a three-time Pro Bowler, spent seven seasons in Dallas and amassed 8,655 rushing yards with 70 total touchdowns in 109 games.

Now, Elliott is preparing to go up against the Cowboys for the first time since his exit. The Patriots go to the AT&T Stadium in Texas in the Week Four contest in the NFL this Sunday, (October 1).

Looking ahead to his return to Dallas, Elliott says he is relishing the chance to take on his old team. The running back also went on to explain why he was disappointed to leave the franchise after spending six seasons with the Cowboys.

“It’s going to be fun,” Elliott told . “I’m excited to go back to Dallas, a place where I have so much history, my home in the offseason. It will be cool to get back in AT&T [Stadium].”

“I was definitely disappointed [to leave the Cowboys] but everything happens for a reason. God has his plan for us. I’m excited for this next chapter in my life. I’m excited to be a Patriot, I’m excited to go chase a Super Bowl here.”

Elliott reached the post-season in four of the six seasons he was with the Cowboys, including in his rookie year in 2016. The running back was also the rushing yards leader in his rookie season, and did so again in 2018.

Elliott was also asked if he envisaged spending the entirety of his career in Callas. However, the running back reiterated his commitment to the Patriots. No one wants to leave the team they’re with, but more importantly, I’m very happy with where I’m at," said Elliott.

Elliott has played in all three of the Patriots’ opening games of the season as the team stands 1-2 and third in the AFC East. He has amassed 122 rushing yards across 28 carries but is yet to score his first touchdown for Bill Belichick’s team.
