Gareth Southgate is waiting on a decision from Newcastle's rising star Elliot Anderson regarding his international future.

The 20-year-old midfielder made 22 Premier League appearances to help the Magpies qualify for the Champions League last season, and has remained in the first team picture in this campaign. He impressed and played the full 90 minutes at Sheffield United on Sunday, as Eddie Howe's men sauntered to an 8-0 win.

But whilst there appear few question marks over his short-term future at club level, Anderson now faces a pivotal decision over his international future. Despite being born in England, he qualifies for Scotland via his Glasgow-born grandmother, and has represented the Tartan Army at four different age group levels.

However, he has also playing once for England Under 19s. It appeared however, the dilemma was to be put to bed last month when he was called into Steve Clarke's senior squad this month for a Euro 2024 qualifier in Cyprus and friendly with, ironically, England.

Despite born in Whitley Bay, playing in the competitive fixture in Cyprus would have nailed his colours to the Scottish mast. However, despite joining up and taking place in initial training, Anderson then withdrew from the squad, citing injury.

And according to the Mail, the English FA are now set to reopen talks with the star. It comes after Anderson admitted he was yet to make a decision over his international allegiance.

Such a situation is not unfamiliar to Southgate, with Declan Rice now an integral part of his current side. Rice represented the Republic of Ireland at Under 17, 19 and 21 level.

He also played three friendly games at senior level, before being cleared to switch his loyalties to England in 2019. He's since won 45 caps under Southgate.

The strength in depth currently boasted by the Three Lions may be a decisive factor in Anderson's decision. And should he feel opportunities will be limited, choosing Scotland could see him playing in his first major international tournament next year.

Clarke's side are on the brink of qualifying for Euro 2024, with five qualifying wins from five in Group A. Just two points from their remaining three games will secure a spot in Germany,
