Jamie Carragher has told Aaron Ramsdale to leave Arsenal in January after claiming he won’t regain his place in the side.

The former Sheffield United and Bournemouth star has lost his place in the Gunners team over recent weeks. His fall down the pecking order has coincided with the arrival of fellow goalkeeper David Raya from Brentford.

The Spaniard was expected to be rotated with Ramsdale, but started for the third consecutive game during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with North London rivals Tottenham. Now, former Liverpool star Carragher has encouraged Ramsdale to pursue a move away from the Emirates Stadium.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “I think he [Ramsdale] will be [leaving in January], if he got an opportunity at a decent club and Arsenal were happy with that. He hasn’t done badly at Arsenal. He’s done really well and better than a lot of people thought he would.

“I think Arsenal will be looking at it and thinking they could get a few quid for him. It could be something that happens in January. You never have two goalkeepers at the same level at a club, especially top ‘keepers.

“Normally when that happens, it is because they are both not good enough and you can’t decide who you should be picking. I really admire Arteta for doing it. It’s ruthless, I get that. But to be honest, I don’t see Ramsdale getting back into the team. Raya is the No.1 and Ramsdale will have to move on. If he can get out in January and Arsenal can get a good fee, it could happen.”

Ramsdale, 25, has three years left on the new contract he signed with Arsenal back in August, with the option of a further season. He has made 83 appearances for the Gunners since being signed for an initial £24m from Sheffield United.

Carragher has already landed himself in some hot water with his comments about the goalkeeper's reaction to Raya’s excellent save to deny Brennan Johnson.

The former defender joked that he would be “devastated” with the save and claimed that it was like “when someone loses the Oscar and they start clapping and smiling for the other person”.

Ramsdale’s dad, Nick, has taken aim at those comments by responding on social media. Writing on X, he said: "You are a Disgrace!! Show some class!! My lad has.”

Ramsdale could yet be handed an opportunity by Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta this week. The North London side are next in action on Wednesday as they take on Brentford in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
