When it comes to booking an appointment with a hairdresser, it's important to manage your expectations for the trip ahead. This is because so many clients walk through the doors expecting to transform their dark, black hair to platinum blonde in just one session.

It has caused hairdressers up and down the country to speak out against the 'annoying' request they've heard time and time again. Answering the question 'What are some helpful and unhelpful things that clients do when they come in for a haircut?' on Reddit, one hair expert said: "My friend is a hairdresser and her biggest complaint is unrealistic expectations. People want to go from dark brown to platinum in one session, bright pink hair that never fades, amazing rainbow hair from a heavily filtered photo on Instagram....

"It's mostly about expectations - if you want blue hair then expect bleach damage and split ends, be prepared to spend money on color safe shampoo, conditioner, hair treatments, maintain it regularly, change your pillowcases. Don't blame your hairdresser if you go swimming for hours and your hair turns green."

In agreement, one customer said: "Can confirm, I had a similar conversation with my hairdresser and its all about unrealistic expectations, she says she is a hairdresser not a magical wizard that can make any look work on any person.

"She said she would say to customers I cant make you look like that person, I can give you a similar hair cut to what they have but that doesn't mean you are going to look like them and she preferred they left with that advice instead of becoming a pain in the a** customer to try and make happy.

"She also mentioned people with dark hair wanting to be blonde and thinking all that needs to be done is put the color dye they want in their hair, its more complex than that, I think she suggests to do it over a few visits to get it done properly but customers assume they can go in with black hair and come out blonde in 45 minutes."

However, most hairdresser "love" it when clients come in with an open mind, asking them to "Do whatever you think will look good." One hair expert said: "I love it when people say do whatever you want. It's my job then to ask questions and see what style and color would work for your life style. I give people what I think they will maintain as well as something flattering."

Another added: "Freedom of creativity - chef's kiss , my life line." One more said: "I absolutely love when a client gives me freedom. A thorough consultation and learning what the client absolutely doesn't want, makes for a very fun and creative process."
