When you wake up after having a bad dream, you may immediately erase the experience from your mind. However, some nightmares shouldn't be swept to the side so easily, as they could help come to terms with your emotions and fears.

Some of the most common nightmares among people include getting shot, teeth falling out, falling, dying, and a partner cheating. Bad dreams come in all forms and there's not always as random as we may think - as most times a nightmare can reflect the issues we choose to ignore in real life.

Dream experts have revealed a variation of dreams could mean different things. If you dreamt of a ghost attacking you - there are possible signs that you may need to speak to a friend or change your sleep habits.

If a ghost attacks you in your dream, this can mean you feel overwhelmed by situations or people in your life. It also symbolises your fear of the unknown. Experts shared that "ghost attack dreams represent your vulnerable emotional state. It might be time to deal with negative emotions head-on, so you can feel more in control of your life."

When you have a dream where you see yourself as a ghost, it might suggest you're feeling guilty or fearful of something in your past. Lastly, if you dreamt you had been possessed by a ghost, it could indicate that you're experiencing sleep paralysis.

A Dream decoder, Theresa Cheung, previously told the Mirror shared the hidden meaning behind the bad dreams we experience and says that most nightmares are anxiety-related.

"Most dreams are actually anxiety-related and unfortunately the majority of our dreams tend to have a nightmarish dread and anxiety theme and that's for a reason, it's to help cathartically release that stress in the dream state where it is safe," Theresa explained.

"In the sleeping state the prefrontal cortex shuts down and you can really let your imagination and your emotions fly, and it's in that state you can make brainstorming connections and find out about things that you are denying the reality of in our waking life because your reasoning and your logic stops you from going there."

"If you are going through periods of poor dream recall, I would urge everyone to activate their dream recall centres and that's in the brain. Because research has proved that it's good for reducing anxiety and stress. Indeed, if dream record is limited, it can lead to increased risk of depression and morbidity," the expert claims.
