Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas can "navigate their divorce in a way that benefits their careers," according to a PR expert.

The former couple - who have been married since 2019 - announced recently that they had decided to end their marriage. They shared the news in a joint statement earlier this month amid rumours that their romance was over.

The situation has brought much attention to Sophie, 27, and Joe, 34 - with them both said to have seen an increase in followers on social media recently, for example.

The Mirror spoke to PR expert Mayah Riaz recently about the situation. Sharing her thoughts, she told us: "On one hand, there will be increased media coverage and public interest - this can boost a celebrity's career options.

"There is often speculation when a celebrity's marriage ends, which generates significant attention. It is possible to use this increased visibility to strategically harness a positive outcome for their career, as it open doors for interviews and talk show appearances," she further commented.

Mayah continued: "A good publicist can capitalise on this increased exposure to redirect public attention towards their professional endeavours, thus broadening their reach and potentially attracting new fans."

"[It's] important to recognise that a public divorce also carries risks, especially [if] the celebrity is seen to be family friendly. As the public may perceive them to have failed to live up to their image and this could lead to disappointment and even anger from their fans.

"Again, a good publicist will be worth their weight in gold during these times. The PR will need to emphasise the well-being of the children whilst highlighting the importance of privacy and redirect the focus towards the celebrity's professional accomplishments or philanthropic efforts."

She shared that publicists can "proactively" manage the narrative in order to "mitigate potential damage" to their client's reputation. Mayah gave examples such as carefully timed statements, controlled interviews and "in extreme situations even legal action to protect the celebrity's image".

Asked if the former couple could take advantage of the attention they are receiving over their separation, Mayah commented: "Joe and Sophie can absolutely navigate their divorce in a way that benefits their careers."

She said that while divorce is a "challenging and personal matter" there are "strategic steps" that can be taken to "shape the narrative" and potentially "enhance their professional trajectories" in the wake of the separation.

Sharing advice, she said: "[They] should capitalise on the media attention surrounding their divorce to showcase their individual talents and projects. By redirecting the focus onto their careers, they can demonstrate their commitment to their craft and maintain relevance in the public eye."

Mayah added that alligning them with causes that "resonate" with fans would generate positive publicity. She however noted that the success of a celebrity's career depends on various factors that are beyond a publicist's control.

We also asked Mayah about the potential for Sophie to be offered more high profile roles now that there's renewed interest. The actor has herself previously suggested that 'popularity' can influence casting decisions for projects.

As reported by the Telegraph, she told Porter in 2017: "A lot of what I have achieved is about timing and luck [but also] about a big social-media following. I auditioned for a project and it was between me and another girl who is a far better actress than I am [but] I had the followers, so I got the job."

It's been reported that Sophie has 100,000 more followers on Instagram since the split rumours surfaced and Joe's follower count is said to have also increased. Mayah stated that such a surge "indicates a boost to their profiles".

Discussing the actor - who is best known for playing Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones - the PR expert told us: "The post-divorce period could bring renewed interest and potentially open doors to higher-profile roles for Sophie.

"She is currently in the spotlight and attracting media attention and public curiosity. This increased exposure can be strategically leveraged to generate buzz and create opportunities for her career to soar to new heights."

Mayah suggested that Sophie's credits - which include the X-Men film series - show "versatility". She said that although she hasn't been nominated for any major film awards, like an Oscar, her work shows her "ability to captivate audiences".

"It will be important for her PR team to highlight her existing successes and to emphasise it for potential growth to position her as an actress who is ready to take on more challenging and prestigious roles."

Mayah said showcasing this through interviews, appearances and media campaigns can "generate excitement". She said: "This will put her in front of casting directors, producers and filmmakers for when [film and TV industry strikes] are over."

Asked whether singer-songwriter Joe could release music about the separation, Mayah noted that it's not uncommon for musicians to "channel" their "personal experiences" into their work and suggested he may choose to "express his emotions" and "share his side of the story" in a song.

"Doing this can be a strategic and effective method for him to communicate his feelings without appearing overly confrontational or engaging in a potentially damaging 'tell-all' type interview - which may be perceived as more aggressive or sensationalised," Mayah added. "By releasing a 'heartbreak' song, it [would allow] Joe to control the narrative surrounding his divorce, offering his perspective in a way that is artistic and open to interpretation."

However, she warned that as a publicist she would advise Joe - if he is considering it - to ensure the "messaging around it strikes a delicate balance," saying the focus should be framed as "self-expression and healing," which would position him as a "relatable and empathetic" person.
