A female politician and her 23-year-old daughter were brutally kidnapped and murdered in Mexico after they left the gym together.

The lifeless bodies, feared to be that of Dr Ruth Alamilla Olguin and her daughter Maggy Alamilla, were found hours after they were abducted yesterday and were discovered next to an oil well. Their bodies had several gunshot wounds, they were blindfolded and hands and feet were tied up. There was reportedly a cardboard box placed next to Ruth, with the words: "This happened to me for being a traitor."

Ruth, who also acts as the municipal Health Director, was reportedly leaving the gym with her daughter when five hooded men stopped them and forced them inside two double-cabin white trucks. Witnesses alerted authorities and police immediately rushed to the scene, while the criminals fled. The discovered remains were taken for autopsies. Although the authorities have not yet confirmed their identities, it is believed that the bodies belong to both women because they were wearing the same sports clothes that they were wearing in the morning.

Ruth was well-known in her community both in her capacity as a politician and a doctor. She had become known as the "people's doctor" which led her to receive threats from gangs.

Meanwhile, a Louisiana fugitive who fled during a 1991 trial over a shooting has been arrested in Mexico more than three decades later. Greg Lawson, 63, fled the country before he was convicted of attempted second-degree murder in 1991. Throughout the years, he was one of the most wanted criminals by the FBI agents.

"The three-decades-long search for a man convicted of attempted murder is over, thanks to a tip received by FBI New Orleans," the FBI wrote on social media. They continued: "This morning, 63-year-old Greg Lawson is back in a Louisiana jail awaiting action by Bienville Parish authorities."

Lawson had been accused of trying to shoot Seth Garlington after a dispute at a petrol station in 1991. The man survived, but Lawson moved towns before a jury found him guilty of attempted second-degree murder.

Douglas A. Williams Jr., special agent in charge of FBI New Orleans, said: "There is no doubt that Mr. Lawson might still be in the wind if our partners in Mexico had not been willing to deal with this so swiftly. "We want to thank our partners and the public in this case, who never gave up hope that justice could be served for Mr Lawson's victim]."
