Billy Sharp has paid tribute to Maddy Cusack after Sheffield United announced the midfielder had tragically passed away at the age of 27.

Cusack was the first player to make 100 appearances for the Women's Championship club, having joined in 2019. She also worked for Sheffield United as a marketing executive.

"Such a lovely girl, enjoyed some amazing times with Maddy and the Blades," club legend Billy Sharp tweeted alongside a picture of himself and Cusack celebrating Sheffield United's promotion. "Such a sad loss. RIP Maddy"

Cusack signed a contract extension in July, heading into what would have been her sixth season at the club. "This is heartbreaking news for everyone at Bramall Lane," chief executive officer Stephen Bettis said.

"Maddy had a unique position of being part of a number of teams at Sheffield United and was popular with everyone that she came into contact with. Her personality and professionalism made her a credit to her family - she will be sadly missed.

"Whilst taking in the news and moving forward, the Club will offer as much support as possible to Maddy's family, friends and colleagues." Cusack's former clubs Leicester, Birmingham, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest also paid tribute to the midfielder.

Sheffield United men's manager Paul Heckingbottom said: "Sad day. Maddy was one of our family. A big part of our club both on and off the pitch. Love and thoughts to Maddy's family."

Teammate Hollie Barker added: "Maddy, I will never ever be able to comprehend what has happened. I got the privilege to share everything with you- the pitch, your friendship, the dance floor and most importantly, the memories. I'll look back one day and relive them pal, I promise. I will miss you so much".

The FA's director of women's football Baroness Sue Campbell also paid tribute, stating: "We are all devastated to learn about the passing of Maddy Cusack. On behalf of the FA, the Lionesses, the Women's Super League and the Women’s Championship, our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Maddy's family, friends, team-mates and everyone at Sheffield United.

"Maddy also represented England at age-group level and we will pay tribute to her at an appropriate point. We are in contact with the club and will continue to offer them our full support during this incredibly sad time."
