Kate's telling gesture in 'survival statement' snap with William and Charles

The Princess of Wales is often touted as the royal the monarchy is depending upon to ensure its longevity.

And in a historic snap alongside King Charles, Queen Camilla and husband Prince William, the foursome sent a statement about 'survival' - with Kate making a telling gesture, according to a body language expert. The picture was taken at Buckingham Palace on the eve of the late Queen's funeral.

In the photo, the four royals can be seen all standing in a row shoulder to shoulder in front of a painting of George IV, who was made Prince of Wales within days of his birth in 1762. And according to body language expert Judi James, the line-up sent a very clear message.

Speaking at the time, she told the Mirror: "As any tribe or dynasty knows a show of unity, continuity and strength is vital once it loses a leader. The royals are making exactly the right 'survival' statement here, following the death of the Queen.

"Charles has included his direct heir and wife Catherine in the line-up to signal the continuity, and the fact they are in one line of four, rather than with William and Catherine placed slightly behind Charles, suggests a sense of 'I've got your back' teamwork. William's pose with his hands clasped in front of his torso, suggests a dutiful approach to his father, while Catherine places an arm around her husband’s back to signal ongoing support."

Meanwhile, Judi also noted Charles is "forming up under potential attack" in the snap due to his "unusual" gesture to Camilla. She added: "This looks like a forming up under potential attack, particularly from the direction of the US, and Charles’s unusual PDA of placing an arm around Camilla’s back, mirroring her arm round his, could be seen as a message in the same direction."

Kate's position in the family has risen recently - especially since she became Princess of Wales more than 12 months ago. And according to a former royal butler, the Royal Family would "collapse without her". Paul Burrell, who worked for Kate's late mother-in-law Princess Diana, believes the future of the family "rests" on her shoulders and that everything is "pinned up" by her.

Speaking on behalf of Slingo, he said: "Kate is in such an incredible position because it all rests on her really, the future rests on Kate and that’s an enormous responsibility because if she decided that she didn’t want to be a part of her marriage any more then I think the royal family would collapse.

"Everything is pinned up by Kate, the future is underpinned by Catherine Middleton and that’s incredible. Back in my day, the future seemed to be pinned on Diana Spencer, our future queen. Now we’re looking at another Princess of Wales who is in the same role that Diana had, married to a Prince of Wales and the future of the monarchy is down to her. It’s not an enviable position to be in."
