Tottenham are set to trigger an option to extend Son Heung-min's contract until June 2026.

Spurs are concerned about losing their new captain after reluctantly accepting a £100million bid for Harry Kane from Bayern Munich during the summer transfer window. The England international, 30, had entered the final year of his contract in north London.

Son, 31, is poised to enter the final year of his deal next summer, but that isn't expected to be an issue due to a clause. Tottenham have the option to automatically extend the South Korea international's contract by a further 12 months and will do so shortly.

By triggering that clause, Spurs will ensure Son stays at the club until a week before his 34th birthday. He promised to give "everything for this shirt and this armband" when Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou gave him the captaincy last month.

As reported by The Telegraph, it's unclear exactly when Tottenham will trigger the clause in Son's contract. Yet club chiefs are said to be relaxed about the situation and will not let their skipper enter the final year of his contract next summer.

Son signed his most recent deal with Tottenham in July 2021. According to 90min, he could even agree a new long-term contract with his current employers. By signing such an extension, Son would be virtually committing the rest of his career to Spurs.

Son has been one of Tottenham's star players since joining the club from Bayer Leverkusen eight years ago. He's scored 148 goals in 377 games, helping them reached the 2019 Champions League final and the 2021 Carabao Cup final.

The forward was also part of the Spurs squad that finished second in the Premier League in 2017. Although he is yet to win a major honour in north London, he is a three-time Tottenham Player of the Season and won the Premier League Golden Boot in 2022.

Son was also named in the Professional Footballers' Association's (PFA) Team of the Year in 2021 and won FIFA's Puskas Award for the best goal scored during the 2019/20 season for his sublime effort against Burnley, dribbling from his own half before slotting home.

Son has already scored three Premier League goals this term and is expected to play a big role under Postecoglou. "Sonny has great leadership qualities, both on and off the pitch, and is the ideal choice to become our new captain," said the Spurs boss on handing him the captaincy.

"Everyone knows he is a world class player, and he has enormous respect from everyone in the dressing room. He transcends groups within the squad. That's not just because he's popular - it's because of what he has achieved in the game, both here and as captain of South Korea."
