Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 3 delay isn't as dire as you think

Baldur's Gate 3' s third major patch was expected today but has been pushed out to tomorrow so the studio can 'thoroughly test' the impending changes.

Larian Studios has already deployed a slew of hotfixes for Baldur's Gate 3 since launch, firing them off at a rate not dissimilar to Activision Blizzard's post-launch flurry of updates for Diablo 4. Today's update will be the third 'proper' patch and while the contents haven't been disclosed, early Baldur's Gate 3 patch notes are likely to be heavy on bug fixes, given the state of Act 3.

Taking to the game's official Twitter account, the developer tweeted that the third Baldur's Gate 3 patch is coming but will no longer deploy today. Instead, players can expect it tomorrow on Friday, September 21 so the delay isn't too heinous after all. The tweet also describes the update as a "big one" and the sheer size of it may have factored into the postponement of it, with the studio saying it needs to be tested thoroughly before it's rolled out.

Patch 1 addressed over 1,000 bugs, and for our all the short kings and queens out there, improved kissing contact for short races. Patch 2 did more bug zapping, saw more improvements to performance, and introduced a new epilogue scene for Karlach, as well as additional movements for the character in Act 1 and Act 2. Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 3 is expected to blast more bugs and address more performance issues, with Act 3 hopefully being the target. The density of the city in this act, thickly populated with NPCs, is currently too much for PC and PS5.

Wishful thinking

Mac gamers will be happy to know that the Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 3 delay won't affect the release of the full game on the platform. Larian reconfirmed the launch on Twitter yesterday, and has linked to a handy guide players can use to prepare themselves. The Xbox version of the game was promised sometime between September and November – with no split-screen co-op for Xbox Series S in an unprecedented move that deviates from parity feature clause Microsoft has in place, which only really makes allowances for performance differences.

It's incredibly unlikely that this will be happening tomorrow; it's a big release in itself and Larian would make much more of a fuss about it. What we are looking forward to is the tease of being able to change your character's appearance. The studio director mentioned adding a mirror to the game, and typically, these are used in games to change your look. That's not possible in Baldur's Gate 3 right now, so this will be a welcome change for players who want to shake things up.
