Paul Scholes believes Rasmus Hojlund can use his first Manchester United goal as a springboard for success, despite the crisis engulfing the club.

United fell to a 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich on Wednesday, though in truth that close scoreline flattered them. The Bundesliga champions were comfortable throughout the Champions League group stage clash.

The visitors were buoyed by two goals in the last five minutes, both from Casemiro, though the second of those came with the last kick of the game. Hojlund had earlier cut the deficit to 2-1, with his first goal since joining United from Atalanta in the summer.

And the Dane's performance left Scholes impressed, with the United legend now tipping him to kick on. Scholes insisted his goal at the Allianz will be the perfect springboard for him to find success at Old Trafford.

"I am really pleased for him to get off the mark. That will do him the world of good, it’s a scrappy goal I suppose and it gave United hope, but once they scored, Bayern would turn it on for five minutes and go up the other end and score and get a goal," he told TNT Sports.

"When you look at the game as a whole, I thought Manchester United did well but still conceded two goals early on and lacked that concentration. Those three goals flattered Manchester United, I thought they were outclassed in the second half really. There is experience in this team, but it’s not being used."

While Scholes did offer that slight glimmer of hope about Hojlund, he was less positive about United's wider struggles. Boss Erik ten Hag is failing to get a grip of the problems at Old Trafford.

A fresh issue reared its head on Wednesday, with Andre Onana making a dreadful error as he failed to keep out Leroy Sane's shot for Bayern's first goal. And Scholes is growing concerned about the quality of United's squad.

"He’s been less than convincing in goal, stopping goals which is why he is there. He is a goalkeeper. He has been brilliant with his feet, but he’s making mistakes. He has to get over that," Scholes added.

"You have disappointments in games, but you can’t afford to at this club because you are playing again Saturday. The spotlight is going to be on it, but he has been at a big club. They have had spells in every game they have lost this season where they have done okay, but that is not good enough.

"There is a softness and weakness there and once they concede one, you need to say come on, the next five minutes let’s stay in the game and before you know it, they score another goal. I think this is almost going to be an identical season to last year - they are a cup team.

"They could possibly win the FA Cup or the Carabao Cup, they are just not at this level yet. I think the summer has hindered them of getting where that next level is and we saw tonight that they are below this level."

United have a prime chance to get their season back on track when they travel to Burnley on Saturday. The Clarets are yet to win a game this season, though United themselves are only five points above them.
