The lucky winner of Wednesday's Powerball could win an eyewatering $672million (£542m) after Monday's draw didn't produce a winner.

The jackpot is currently ranked as the 10th-largest prize in Powerball history. If follows a $1.08billion jackpot paid out in California in July.

Despite not getting a jackpot winner in Monday’s drawing – white balls with the numbers 2, 21, 26, 40 and 42 and red Powerball 9 – there were still more than 905,000 winning tickets across the US. A player in Massachusetts won $1 million by matching all five white ball numbers.

The drawing will be broadcast on Wednesday night at 10.59 pm ET (3.59am UK). The winnings will be the Powerball's third-highest total this year. Another winner of the Monday draw included 17 tickets earning $50,000 prizes and three winning $150,000.

If someone matches all six numbers on Wednesday night's drawing, they will have two choices - either get one immediate payment, followed by 29 annual instalments that increase by five per cent each year, or a lump sum cash payment of approximately $320.5million. In both cases the prize amounts are calculated before taxes.

According to Powerball officials, the overall odds of winning a prize are 1 in 24.9, and the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.

There are just weeks left to still unclaimed on Powerball lottery and MegaMillions tickets

The lucky winners of the draws are yet to step forward and claim their winnings. The winning $1.6billion was bought at a Publix in Florida. It was the largest prize that the game has ever seen. The shop who sold the winning ticket gets a cut of the winnings, which is standard for lottery in the US.

"At this time, the winner (unknown to Lottery officials) has not come forward to claim their prize," a spokesperson said on Friday. "However, please note that Florida Mega Millions jackpot winners have 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim their prize, which is Sunday, February 4, 2024."

Although there's a bit of leeway to claim the prize, if the winner wants to get their payout as a one-time lump sum payment or annuity checks, the prize must be claimed 60 days after the winning numbers are drawn. In July, a store in Los Angeles, California, sold a Powerball ticket worth $1.08billion. Las Palmitas Mini Market earned a massive $1million just for selling the ticket, the California Lottery revealed.

So far no one has been identified as the winner and the Lottery is urging players to double check their tickets. The California Lottery said it "typically does not publicly confirm or acknowledge when a prize claim has been received because there's no way to be certain any given claim is legitimate."
