David Beckham's mother has admitted she feared her son would "lose everything he worked for" when he first started dating his future wife Victoria Beckham.

Sandra West, who shares David with ex-husband Ted Beckham, reveals her early concerns over her son and daughter-in-law's romance in a teaser for a new Netflix documentary centred around the couple. Titled BECKHAM, the four-part series follows David's journey from a working class childhood to becoming one of the biggest stars in the world.

In a two-minute preview released ahead of the feature's premiere next month, David's mum Sandra, 74, can be seen discussing the moment her son fell for Posh Spice back in 1997. David and Victoria first met when he was rising through the ranks at Manchester United, yet to become captain of the national team, and she was busy performing with the Spice Girls, the biggest band in the world.

Recalling the early stages of David and Victoria's romance in the recently released Netflix trailer, Sandra admits she feared her talented son would lose focus and his career would suffer due to finding love. She says: "We were worried he would lose everything he worked for because football had always come first and then all of a sudden it wasn't."

Sandra had nothing to worry about as David went on to cement his status as one of the most talented footballers of his generation, captaining the England team from 2000 until 2006 and commanding a 35million euros (approximately £25m) transfer fee when he moved from Manchester United to Real Madrid in 2003.

The dad-of-four also managed to carve out a successful business away from football alongside wife Victoria, as the loved-up couple established Brand Beckham after getting engaged in 1998, in addition to welcoming four children into the world together; Brooklyn, 24, Romeo, 21, Cruz, 18, and Harper, 12. It's thought David and Victoria have accumulated an estimated net worth of £380million over the last 25 years.

Arriving on Netflix on October 4, BECKHAM promises to take viewers on a rollercoaster "and builds a surprising, personal and definitive story of one of the most recognisable and scrutinised athletes of all time." Alongside the Beckham family, David's former boss Sir Alex Ferguson and his old teammates also make cameos in the series, discussing David's highs and lows both on and off the pitch.

In the trailer, David admits to "drowning" at the height of his fame in the 00s at times and recalls not sleeping or eating after being sent off during England's match against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup, which saw the now popular star blamed for the national team's defeat and villianifed.
