San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has explained what he needs to improve despite enjoying a winning start to the season.

The Niners have won each of their first two games in the 2023 NFL regular season, with Purdy starring as the team’s starting quarterback. Purdy has entered his first year beginning as a starter and his second in the NFL after being drafted with the 262nd overall pick in 2022.

After helping the Niners beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week One, Purdy starred yet again on Sunday as San Francisco claimed a 30-23 win over the Los Angeles Rams. It means that the Niners start the season 2-0 and are top of the NFC West division.

Purdy did not complete a touchdown pass in the win over the Rams on Sunday, but he is yet to throw an interception in his 54 pass attempts so far this season. Despite the impressive start to the year, Purdy admitted after the win over L.A. that he still had aspects of his game that he needed to work on.

"Those are on me," Purdy told , when asked about three incomplete passes during the win over the Rams. "I've got to do better.

“I've got to hit them in stride and not overthrow them. It's as simple as that. That's what you've got to do as an NFL quarterback, and I put that on myself."

Despite not completing a touchdown pass, Purdy was still praised by Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan. The coach explained why he was impressed by Purdy’s performance at the SoFi Stadium.

"The main thing he did today was protect the ball," Shanahan told reporters when asked about Purdy.

"Besides those three misses, which none of them were easy, he took care of the football, didn't give them a chance to touch it, but when he was under duress, he was smart."

Purdy was confirmed as the Niners’ starting quarterback in August, with Sam Darnold handed the back-up role. Trey Lance was traded to the Dallas Cowboys following the news that Purdy would be the starter.

The game against the Rams was only the second competitive game that Purdy has taken to the field since undergoing surgery on his elbow in March. Now the second-year quarterback will be busy preparing for the Niners’ Week Three game against the New York Giants in a few days time on Thursday Night Football.
