Detectives investigating the murders of John McCullough and Lois McCullough in Chelmsford have found human remains, Essex Police said.
The discovery was made at the couple's home in Pump Hill, Essex, it was confirmed on Monday. The tragic latest development follows news that daughter Virginia McCullough has been charged with their murder.
Detectives believe the remains to be those of Mr and Mrs McCullough, both in their 70s, although formal identification is yet to take place. Concerns for their welfare were raised on Wednesday last week after neither had been seen in some years.
A stretcher was seen being carried from the couple's home on Sunday carrying what was believed to be a body bag. Essex Police confirmed on Monday that remains had been discovered on the property.

On Wednesday September 13, we received reports of concerns for the welfare of two people aged in their 70s.

“This led officers to an address in Pump Hill, Chelmsford, where investigative work is ongoing. As a result of the extensive work carried out by a dedicated team, we have recovered the remains of two people from the address.
“Although formal identification is yet to take place, Essex Police believe these to be the remains of John McCullough, and Lois McCullough, both aged in their 70s.” Virginia McCullough is accused of murdering the couple in their family home between August 21, 2018, and September 15, 2023.
The 35-year-old appeared before Chelmsford magistrates court on Monday charged with two counts of murder. The case is now due to be heard at Basildon Crown court on Tuesday.

His wife of around 20 years, Lois, would have been 75 if still alive. Relatives of the McCulloughs, who are being supported by specialist officers, said in a statement released by Essex Police: “We are deeply shocked by their deaths and ask for privacy at this difficult time.”
Det Supt Rob Kirby, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: “This continues to be an incredibly complex investigation. Our work will continue throughout the coming days, as our specialist officers and staff continue to piece together all elements of this matter.
“Officers will carry out work at addresses in and around Pump Hill throughout the coming days. I would continue to urge against speculation as these enquiries continue. A family is grieving the loss of two relatives and officers are supporting them. We're encouraging anyone with information to get in touch.”
