Amazon customers who are registered to its Prime membership will be hit by a new charge from today on some same-day delivery orders.

The online retail giant has introduced a new fee of £1.99 for same-day delivery orders that come under £20. Previously, all items eligible under Amazon Prime were delivered at no extra cost. If same-day delivery is available for that Prime item, you normally need to place your order before midday to get your package by 10pm. The fee for customers who are not Prime members will remain £5.99.

Amazon Prime membership costs £8.99 a month or £95 a year. In an email sent to Prime members detailing the change, Amazon wrote: "As we invest to improve our same-day delivery service we are writing to let you know about an update to the same-day delivery options available for Prime members in eligible postcodes.

"Your Prime Same-Day or Overnight (Tomorrow by 1 PM) orders over £20 will automatically be delivered to you using the fastest available option, at no extra cost. This means that where available, you will get eligible orders delivered for free on the same day or by 1PM the following day, depending on when you place your order.

"Eligible Prime orders under £20 will continue to be shipped with free One-Day delivery. Where available, Same-Day delivery can be selected at checkout, but there will be a fee of £1.99 per delivery for orders under £20. The fee for customers who are not Prime members will remain £5.99."

Prime customers who are unhappy about the change can cancel their membership penalty-free. To do this, click on “Accounts & Lists” in the top right hand corner (if you’re on a desktop computer) then click on “Prime” to manage your subscription.

Members who haven't used any Prime services should get a full refund. If you have only used Amazon Prime delivery benefits, then you may be eligible for a partial refund. But if other services - such as Prime Video, Prime Music, or Prime Gaming - have been used, you won’t get a refund.

A new study by TechRadar found digital subscriptions and tech purchases are still being cancelled or delayed due to cost of living crisis. A staggering 50% of those asked had stopped or cut back on entertainment subscriptions in the UK and the US. To check which services you're signed up to, check your most recent bank statements and make a note of your direct debits.
