Michelle Keegan has been praised by Brassic co-star Joe Gilgun for helping him with his mental health.

Joe, who has bipolar disorder, said that the former Corrie star had been a blessing both on and off set. He said: “She’s really thoughtful, she’s really saved me a few times by just knowing what I need and when. You can’t put a price on that kind of friendship.” He said Michelle, who is the lead female star of the Sky Max series, always knew the right path of action to take when he was struggling.

He added: “I couldn’t be in a safer place and it’s not easy to understand people with mental health issues when they’re being dicks and you have to be really patient.

"I think what it is with Michelle is she knows when to give you a bit of distance and space. It’s almost like she knows what you need and even though she feels like maybe she should come and chat or something, she’ll go, ‘no, that would be for me, not Joe.’”

Joe is the co-creator of the loosely-autobiographical series. He plays Vinnie O’Neill, a man living with bipolar disorder who commits crimes with friends for cash. Joe said: “Every time it’s about to come out, I’m so frightened about what people are going to think. It’s the biographical part of it. I’ve got bipolar disorder and I can be very difficult. I want to be as honest as we can about the mental health side of things.”

Fan will see Vinnie start therapy in the latest series. Asked how important was it to put that element in the show, he said: “Really, really important. These scenes are based on my time spent with my therapist, Anna.”
